Beyond These Stars · Workers and housing
Why are my buildings empty when Peeps live nearby?
On this page
Select the workers’ housing and check its blue work-range outline, then inspect the shift and vacant job slots. Peeps take jobs automatically within housing range, but production buildings need all work slots filled. A break, exhausted workforce or strike needs a different response from a distant home.

Check the shift before moving buildings

Peeps work and take breaks together. Empty workplaces during the break are not the same as buildings that never get staffed. Watch the work status through the next shift and inspect whether the same essential job remains vacant.
If there are more jobs than available workers, some workplaces can be neglected. Check the building’s Priority control when a nonessential task is taking workers from power, food or other immediate needs. Do not place another factory until you can staff the first one.
Select the home, not just the road
- Choose occupied housing near the affected workplace.
- Inspect its blue outline: the official guide uses that outline to show job range. The wiki describes a 16-tile limit.
- Check that the target workplace is inside range and has road access.
- Inspect its filled work slots during a work shift. A production building with only part of its required workforce can remain stopped.
Being able to carry goods farther away does not extend job range. For distant deposits, plan a small housing cluster with its own supplies rather than stretching one road and assuming residents will work at its far end.
Make the break restore the workforce

Check food and drink together. The official beginner guide explains that consuming only one of them restores less Energy than having both. Adding beds does not solve a home that residents cannot restock.

If Energy keeps dropping, review Overtime or Hard Labor, temperature and polluted walking routes. For a strike, read the demands in Goals and address them; a new job priority does not end a collective refusal to work.
Finally inspect toxic tiles on the route or workplace. Peeps normally avoid those areas. If the range, shift, supplies and access all check out but nobody takes a job, keep a save and capture those panels for a bug report. The launch-week empty-workplace thread has no confirmed universal fix.
