Bane Nightmare: know what happens when someone attacks the sleeper

Nightmare can affect a friendly or enemy hero. Damage can wake a target, and a direct attack can transfer the effect to the attacker; Bane has a special exception allowing him to attack the sleeping target.

Practise the decision step by step

  1. Choose whether the immediate purpose is to isolate an opponent or briefly affect a friendly hero.
  2. Tell teammates which target is asleep before they automatically attack it.
  3. Read the current alternate-cast behaviour: the current description can keep the target stationary instead of using the chosen walking direction.
  4. Before Fiend’s Grip, inspect other enemies who can interrupt your channel while you hold one opponent.

The mistake to look for

Treating every disable as a free invitation for all allies to attack can defeat the purpose of Nightmare. Bane’s own attack exception should not be assumed for teammates.

A controlled demo exercise

In demo mode, apply Nightmare and compare a direct attack by another unit with Bane’s own attack. Observe the actual state change. Test the channel separately so you can tell a wake-up event from an interrupted ultimate.

Keep the setup consistent between attempts: same hero state, same target arrangement and the same abilities available. Change one decision, observe the outcome, then repeat. If an item, upgrade or new patch changes the ability, read that effect before comparing the attempts.

Use this in a real match

Before acting, name the immediate objective: control a target, protect an ally, maintain position or create a damage opportunity. After the fight, review whether your chosen action produced that objective. The outcome of the match alone does not tell you which part of the sequence worked.

This page is a focused mechanics lesson. It does not supply a universal item build, talent order, exact timing script or ranked win-rate claim. Team composition, items and current balance changes can alter the best choice.
