Lina Fiery Soul not gaining stacks: hits, items and expiry
On this page
Fiery Soul requires hitting an enemy with a spell. Casting into empty space does not meet that condition, and Valve explicitly notes that using items does not trigger it.

A cast animation and a successful hit are different events. If your attack-speed plan depends on stacks, check the trigger and the buff timer rather than assuming every button refreshes the passive.
What to do, in order
- Look at the current Fiery Soul buff and remaining duration before spending a spell to maintain it.
- Aim a learned spell at an enemy you can actually hit; an empty cast is not a successful trigger.
- After the hit, confirm the stack or duration change in your client.
- Do not rely on an item activation to maintain the passive. The official notes explicitly exclude items as triggers.
- When moving between fights or camps, account for expiry rather than calculating your next attack sequence with stacks you no longer have.
Match the symptom to the cause
I cast but did not gain the buff
Check whether the spell hit an enemy. The trigger is a hit, not the act of casting.
An item did damage but the passive did not refresh
The official item exclusion matters even if the item’s animation looks like a spell.
My attack speed suddenly fell
The base stack duration is 16 seconds. Successful spell hits refresh the duration; an expired buff cannot support the same attack-speed expectation.

Apply it to one concrete situation
You leave a fight with stacks and travel to another area. If more time passes than the remaining buff duration, your next target is not being attacked under the old full-stack conditions. Check the buff first, then decide whether spending mana to hit enemies is worthwhile.
Current base tooltip values
Values below are the unmodified fields in Valve’s dated English ability data. Slash-separated entries are listed level values, not a recommended skill build. Read the field label: damage, range, duration and percentages have different meanings. Upgrades and modifiers can change your client’s values.
| Tooltip field | Listed base value(s) |
|---|---|
| Mana cost | 0 |
| Cooldown (seconds) | 0 |
| ATTACK SPEED BONUS | 7 / 14 / 21 / 28 |
| MOVE SPEED BONUS | 1 / 1.5 / 2 / 2.5% |
| MAX STACKS | 7 |
| DURATION | 16 |
Limits that matter
Base maximum stacks are seven. This page does not promise an exact number of stacks per multi-target spell hit beyond the current tooltip behavior; observe the client before using a frame-perfect combo calculation.
Related questions
Does using an item trigger Fiery Soul?
No. Valve’s current note explicitly says it does not.
What refreshes the duration?
The official notes say the duration refreshes when an opponent is hit with a spell. A missed cast does not establish that trigger.
