Why do Shadow Shaman Serpent Wards die despite magic immunity?
On this page
Serpent Wards are magic immune, not indestructible. The current base tooltip lists two hits to destroy a ward, so enemy attacks can remove them even when spells do not.

A tower push can fail when you budget the ultimate’s entire duration as guaranteed damage. Duration is the upper window for surviving wards, while attacks can shorten that window considerably.
What to do, in order
- Decide whether the cast is for a building, a hero fight or a specific area. The wards can attack enemy units and structures.
- Before casting, check who can reach and attack the ward cluster. Magic immunity does not answer that question.
- Use allied pressure to limit easy attacks on the wards instead of assuming the entire cluster survives on its own.
- Watch how many wards remain, rather than reading the duration as guaranteed remaining damage.
- If wards disappear early, distinguish enemy attacks from the natural end of their lifetime before changing your cast plan.
Match the symptom to the cause
A spell did not hurt them, so I thought nothing could
Magic immunity and immunity to attacks are different. The tooltip supplies a hit-based destruction value.
Creeps needed more effort to remove them
The official description says creeps deal half damage to Serpent Wards. Do not assume all attackers contribute identically.
I calculated damage for the full 45 seconds
A 45-second base lifetime assumes the ward survives. An early-destroyed ward cannot contribute damage for the remainder.

Apply it to one concrete situation
A siege plan based on “cast once, leave, and receive the entire duration of damage” ignores whether defenders can attack the wards. A more useful check is to watch defender access and the surviving ward count while allies continue the push.
Current base tooltip values
Values below are the unmodified fields in Valve’s dated English ability data. Slash-separated entries are listed level values, not a recommended skill build. Read the field label: damage, range, duration and percentages have different meanings. Upgrades and modifiers can change your client’s values.
| Tooltip field | Listed base value(s) |
|---|---|
| Mana cost | 200 / 350 / 550 |
| Cooldown (seconds) | 110 / 105 / 100 |
| DURATION | 45 |
| HITS TO DESTROY | 2 |
| WARD DAMAGE | 50 / 85 / 120 |
Limits that matter
Mega Ward and Shard values are separate upgrade mechanics. The base two-hit tooltip must not be presented as the health of every upgraded ward form.

Can the ultimate damage buildings?
Yes. Valve explicitly includes structures among its targets.
Does the ward damage number equal guaranteed damage to every target?
No. Attack frequency, survival and the target’s applicable defenses matter. This page does not turn the listed per-attack value into a guaranteed total.
