In 1.0, every fish can be caught in any body of water when the bait and rod are suitable. Start with the target fish’s tier, equip the corresponding bait, and check that your rod can handle that tier. Improved bait guarantees the tier of a fish that bites—not a particular species or a fish on every cast.

Build a fishing setup around one target

First decide why you need the fish: a named recipe, a collection goal, or simply a higher-tier catch. Write down the actual target instead of treating “better fishing” as a single equipment problem. A recipe calling for one species and a goal calling for any suitable fish need different stopping rules.

  1. Identify the tier. Inspect the target and the bait descriptions available in your current game. If your information comes from an older guide, recheck it before buying a large supply.
  2. Check the rod separately. Having the intended bait equipped does not establish that your rod can handle the fish. Upgrade the limiting part of the setup instead of assuming bait fixes everything.
  3. Choose ordinary or improved bait deliberately. Use improved bait when avoiding off-tier fish matters to the current goal. Do not spend it expecting an undocumented guarantee for one named species.
  4. Read each result. Distinguish the fish’s identity and tier from trash or treasure. Keep only the comparison that answers your original question.

What improved bait actually guarantees

ExpectationCorrect reading of the 1.0 rule
A fish bites on improved baitThe fish matches the bait’s tier.
The next cast must land my named speciesThat guarantee is not established by the tier rule.
Every cast produces a fishThe fish-tier guarantee does not remove the separate trash and treasure results.
Another body of water is mandatory for this speciesThe rework allows all fish in every body of water with the appropriate equipment.

For example, suppose a recipe needs a particular fish in a tier you can already target. Improved bait addresses the off-tier part of the problem. It does not make all results in that tier interchangeable. Check the landed species before deciding the recipe is ready.

When should you change locations?

Move when the current place is awkward or unsafe, when you want a convenient return route, or when you deliberately want to compare a marked fishing spot. Those are useful reasons. Repeatedly running between distant ponds while leaving the same unsuitable bait and rod equipped does not test the equipment problem.

The developer separately rebalanced trash and treasure, with particular changes at marked fishing spots. That is a reason to distinguish your fishing objective: targeting fish and pursuing treasure are not the same experiment. No numerical bite rate or optimal spot is claimed here.

Diagnose the result before spending more resources

Once the immediate recipe or goal is satisfied, stop and reassess the next target. A fishing loadout should support the next useful catch, rather than consume higher-tier supplies by habit.
