Ordinary hits fill Spirit Gauge, while Spirit Blade attacks spend it. Landing Spirit Roundslash or a suitable Focus Strike raises its level. A full gauge is therefore not the same goal as red gauge level: decide whether the next action needs resource, a color increase or a red-state payoff.

Official visual introduction

CAPCOM’s August 2024 Long Sword overview. It is historical visual context; current named actions and conditions come from the base-game manual. Watch on the official channel.

Check in this order

  1. Observe gauge amount and color separately before beginning the next sequence.
  2. Build usable resource with attacks, then choose an opening long enough to land the color-raising action.
  3. For Foresight Slash, distinguish dodging the attack from landing the counter afterward. The successful dodge-and-hit restores the gauge for its follow-up.
  4. Use the intended Spirit Roundslash or other documented route to raise color, then decide whether to maintain red or spend a level on the relevant attack.

Why a counter can look successful but not finish the plan

Foresight Slash consumes the gauge. Its documented successful dodge-and-hit condition fills it, after which it can chain into Spirit Roundslash. Evading danger alone does not establish that the returning hit connected. If your follow-up lacks resource or the color never rises, inspect both events rather than only the dodge animation.

An empty gauge changes the counter

The manual says Foresight Slash’s effect decreases when the gauge is empty. Do not assume that the same input from an empty state offers an identical opportunity. Check resource before choosing that defensive route and preserve another response when it is unsuitable.

Use the correct color route

A precisely timed Iai Spirit Slash can raise a level. Focus Strike: Unbound Thrust also raises levels from its wound or weak-point interaction. These are different conditions, not interchangeable reasons that any sword hit should turn the gauge red. Practice one identified route at a time.

Red is a state to manage

Spirit Roundslash or Spinning Crimson Slash can extend red duration, while the named Spirit Thrust route spends a level when eligible. Plan the opening around the result you want rather than repeatedly pressing the most dramatic action. No timing window, motion value or optimal damage rotation is invented here.
