Wilds Switch Axe Keeps Reloading? Switch Gauge vs Amp Gauge
On this page
You need at least 30% Switch Gauge to morph into Sword Mode; insufficient Switch Gauge makes the action Reload instead. Axe hits build that gauge and Sword attacks spend it. Sword hits build the separate Amp Gauge, whose full state enables Amped benefits. Filling Amp is not a substitute for the Switch resource.

Official visual introduction
CAPCOM’s August 2024 Switch Axe overview. Treat it as a visual introduction; the written resource requirements follow the current base-game manual. Watch on the official channel.
Check in this order
- When Morph produces Reload, inspect Switch Gauge before trying another input.
- Use the Axe resource route to rebuild enough Switch Gauge for the intended Sword sequence.
- In Sword Mode, distinguish the Switch amount being spent from the Amp progress being earned.
- Reserve an actual opening for the Amped payoff and account for the move returning you to Axe Mode.
Two gauges explain two different failures
One failure is not being able to enter Sword Mode. Another is entering it but lacking Amped State for the desired finisher. Name the blocked state first. Repeating Sword-entry inputs does not prove you have the resource needed, and an Amp-focused recommendation does not automatically resolve an empty Switch Gauge.
Build Switch deliberately
CAPCOM names Axe: Spiral Burst Slash as restoring a large amount of Switch Gauge. Power Axe Mode also increases its gain from attacks. Use a reachable attack sequence to solve the resource problem rather than waiting for a long Sword opportunity with no gauge to spend in it. The sheathed gauge also recovers over time.
Build Amp in the appropriate mode
Sword: Double Slash into Heavenward Flurry is a documented Amp-building route. Whether the full sequence fits the current opening is a separate decision. Do not trade repeated hits for taking an avoidable attack simply because the gauge is almost full.
Know the exit from the finisher
Full Release Slash requires Amped State and returns you to Axe Mode. Element Discharge also has a mode transition. Prepare for that resulting state instead of expecting an uninterrupted Sword loop. A good resource plan includes how the next cycle begins, not only the explosion at the end.
