Valheim Deep North Missing in an Old World? Explored Terrain vs a Fresh Start

Old worlds remain playable in 1.0, but new biome generation works properly only in areas not already explored. Updating does not promise to repopulate previously visited northern terrain with the complete Deep North. Keep your world intact while deciding whether to seek unvisited areas or begin a separate fresh world.

What to do first

  1. Confirm the installed version and which world you loaded. Do not judge 1.0 generation from an older installation.
  2. Review earlier northern expeditions. Having no base there does not prove that the area was never explored.
  3. If keeping the current world matters most, investigate genuinely unvisited terrain before declaring that all new content is absent.
  4. If fresh generation is the priority, create a separate world while preserving the original. Iron Gate recommends a fresh start but does not require it to load an old save.

A playable save is not a regenerated map

The official FAQ supports old saves and separately qualifies biome generation by exploration. Both can be true: your home still loads, while an earlier expedition area retains its old generation. A successful load does not establish that every northern location changed.

Choose what you want to preserve

List buildings, shared routes and ongoing projects before deciding. A group may prefer its established home and accept the limitation; another may want a fresh adventure. A new world is an alternative play space, not an instruction to erase the old one.

Unvisited does not mean a guaranteed location

The generation condition does not provide fixed coordinates, a spawn probability or a promise that the first new area contains your desired resource. Keep a location-specific search separate from whether the world can receive new content at all.

Avoid an unnecessary regeneration experiment

Third-party tools can modify world data. They are not required simply to answer whether old saves work. Before considering one, establish current compatibility and retain an untouched backup. This guide explains the documented base-game choices rather than promising a mod can safely regenerate every existing area.
