Zeus Nimbus guide: targeting, damage and when to buy Aghanim’s Scepter
On this page
Aghanim’s Scepter grants Nimbus: a globally placed cloud that casts Zeus’s current level of Lightning Bolt on the closest enemy unit. It is not guaranteed to focus a hero, and buying Scepter does not automatically make every cloud a kill.

What does Zeus gain from Scepter?

Nimbus is an additional Scepter-granted ability. You choose a location anywhere on the map; the cloud supplies repeated automatic Lightning Bolts to nearby enemies while it survives. The placement is global, but each cloud’s attack area is local.
That distinction defines its value: Zeus can contribute at a distant fight without standing next to it, but he still needs a useful location, eligible nearby enemies and a cloud that survives long enough to act. A remote cast is not a guaranteed interrupt of any specific hero.
Why does Nimbus hit a creep instead of the hero?
Valve’s current note says it affects the closest enemy unit. It does not say “always the closest hero.” A creep nearer the cloud can therefore take a bolt you wanted to land on a hero. An enemy wave changes the target-selection problem even if the hero stays inside the radius.
- Identify the hero or area you actually want the cloud to affect.
- Inspect other enemy units near that location, especially a wave that may be closer to the cloud than the hero.
- Choose the location for target access, rather than dropping it anywhere inside a visually crowded fight.
- Watch which units receive bolts. If creeps are being struck, re-evaluate the target arrangement rather than assuming the spell failed to activate.
- For the next cast, adjust the decision using the enemy’s movement and ability to attack the cloud. Do not infer guaranteed hero priority from a successful previous cast.
Where does Nimbus damage come from?

The cloud uses Zeus’s current level of Lightning Bolt. The dated base damage values for that spell are 140/220/300/380 at levels 1–4. Scepter is not a shortcut that silently replaces a low learned Bolt level with the maximum one.
Worked comparison: a base bolt at level 2 lists 220 damage; at level 4 it lists 380. Their listed difference is 380 − 220 = 160 damage per bolt before applicable defenses and modifiers. This is a comparison of source values, not a measured match result, a promise of final HP loss or a complete Nimbus damage total.
A full-cloud total is especially easy to overstate. You would need the actual number of successful strikes, their targets, target defenses and the cloud’s survival time. Do not multiply duration by an assumed hit rate and call the result guaranteed hero damage.
Should you buy Scepter for Nimbus now?
Use the following as a decision checklist, not a universal “first major item” build. This page has no current ranked-match sample supporting a best-item claim.
| Problem in your match | What Nimbus offers | What it does not solve by itself |
|---|---|---|
| A fight or defended lane is far away | Global placement lets you contribute a local cloud remotely. | It does not move Zeus or make the target remain near the cloud. |
| You want repeated Bolt pressure in one area | Automatic bolts while the cloud survives and finds enemies. | Nearby creeps can take strikes; enemies can attack the cloud. |
| You are dying before using your existing spells | A remote ability can be useful before a commitment. | The new button does not itself prevent Zeus from being caught or killed. |
| Your Lightning Bolt level is low | Its current level is used by Nimbus. | The upgrade does not grant an automatic level-4 Bolt. |
Buy the upgrade when the additional remote pressure is useful enough to justify delaying another purchase in your actual match. If your immediate problem is survival, spell access or resources, compare an option that addresses that problem instead of importing a historical ranking.
Why did the cloud disappear early?
The base lifetime is 30 seconds, but Nimbus can be destroyed. Current data lists eight hits to destroy it and 16 creep hits; Valve also notes that towers and creeps deal half damage to Nimbus. The cloud is not protected from attacks merely because it is airborne in the artwork. The dated bounty field is 125 gold when an enemy hero destroys it.
If it vanishes early, first distinguish destruction from natural expiry. A cloud attacked immediately cannot contribute the same number of bolts as an untouched one. Before the next cast, consider who can safely reach it and whether allies are actually pressuring those attackers.
Current base values and the old 7.00 article
| Field | Current source, checked October 17, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Cloud lifetime | 30 seconds |
| Cloud radius | 450 units |
| Base bolt interval field | 2.5 seconds |
| Nimbus cooldown | 45 seconds |
| Mana cost | 275 |
| Bolt level | Zeus’s current learned Lightning Bolt |
The linked December 12, 2016 article about new 7.00 Scepter upgrades was the topic lead for this guide. It discussed a different version: for example, its cloud lifetime was 50 seconds and radius 500. This guide uses current Valve data instead. Its author’s ranking and “first major item” recommendation are historical opinions, not current evidence for a mandatory build. No prose or screenshots from that guide were reused.
Can I rely on it to interrupt a channel?
Lightning Bolt’s official notes say it can interrupt channeled spells and items, and the current Bolt description includes a mini-stun. Nimbus uses that learned spell, but the cloud still chooses its target automatically and strikes on its own schedule. Do not promise a teammate an exact timed interrupt merely because Nimbus is available. Consider target eligibility, other nearby units and the relevant defensive state.
Sources and limits
Valve’s current English Zeus data supplies Nimbus’s grant condition, target rule, values and connection to Lightning Bolt. Valve’s official Zeus page supplies the underlying Lightning Bolt presentation. Values were checked October 17, 2026; upgrades and modifiers can alter a specific match. We did not verify these interactions in a live match and do not claim a current Scepter win rate or ranking.
