Make the Abyssal Harpoon at a level-2 Workbench with 8 Finewood, 30 Chitin and 3 Leather Scraps. Its throw tethers non-boss creatures; tow a Serpent to land before killing it if you want a practical way to collect its sinking scales.

Standard, unmodded equipment and Hildir quest rules; normal portal restrictions noted where relevant.

Treat the floating island as a short mining stop

Look for a Leviathan in the Ocean: a small rocky back covered in Abyssal Barnacles. Bring a pickaxe, a boat and enough stamina for the return swim. Park close enough to reach the boat, with a clear route back onto it.

Mine the barnacles for Chitin. The first disturbance can start the creature’s departure, so stop treating the surface as a permanent island once shaking and sound begin. Collect the loose material and head back to the boat. A last extra node is not worth losing the whole load at sea.

The Ocean is where the Leviathan material trip begins. This official sailing image shows boat travel, not a Leviathan spawn or a harpooned Serpent.

Prepare the tow before throwing

Craft and repair the harpoon, eat stamina-supporting food and select the shore you intend to reach. A short open route is easier to manage than one through rocks, buildings or a crowded dock. The harpoon is a relocation tool; its small initial hit is not the reason to carry it.

Hit the Serpent with the throw and watch for the tether. Interacting with a boat’s rudder does not by itself cancel the line. In a group, agree who steers and who maintains the harpoon before beginning, so two players do not work against each other’s route.

Why the rope keeps snapping

What happensChange on the next tow
Stamina empties as the creature resistsShorten the route, start with a fuller bar and bring recovery.
The creature catches on a structure or terrainMove into open space; do not try to drag it through the obstacle.
The line disappears after another attackKeep the towing player from attacking until the target is positioned.
The gap becomes too largeSlow down and bring the target closer instead of extending the line.

Finish where the loot can be reached

Pull the Serpent into shallow water or onto land, then finish the fight with an appropriate weapon. Serpent Scales and the trophy sink, which is why location matters before the kill. Do not deliberately finish it in deep water and expect the harpoon to recover individual dropped items.

The tether does not work as a fishing replacement and does not attach to bosses. For moving livestock, prepare the destination pen and opening first; a successful hit alone does not guarantee the animal arrives safely or becomes tame.
