Valheim Root Armor: Craft the Harnesk Without Misreading Its Resistances
On this page
Craft Root armor from Abomination Roots at a level-2 Workbench. The Harnesk gives pierce resistance, the Mask gives poison resistance, and all three pieces together add +15 Bows. Each Root piece also makes you weak to fire; the set does not provide blanket damage resistance.
Standard, unmodded equipment and Hildir quest rules; normal portal restrictions noted where relevant.
Gather the material with a recovery plan
Roots come from Abominations in the Swamp. Mark a safe approach and a place to recover before fighting one; Wet conditions, poison sources and extra enemies can turn a material farm into several unrelated fights at once.
Bring a weapon suited to fighting the Abomination rather than relying on the armor you are trying to make. Collect the Roots after the kill and return before running out of food or durability. There is no need to complete an entire set in the same expedition.

Buy the effect you actually need
| Piece | First recipe | Individual effect |
|---|---|---|
| Root Mask | 10 Root, 10 Ancient Bark, 4 Leather Scraps | Poison resistance; fire weakness |
| Root Harnesk | 10 Root, 10 Ancient Bark, 2 Deer Hide | Pierce resistance; fire weakness |
| Root Leggings | 10 Root, 10 Ancient Bark, 2 Deer Hide | Fire weakness |
The first complete set totals 30 Roots, 30 Ancient Bark, 4 Leather Scraps and 4 Deer Hide. This table excludes upgrades. A Harnesk can provide its individual benefit with a different helmet and leggings; you do not have to pay the whole-set cost to use pierce resistance.
Do not turn one resistance into protection from everything
The Harnesk helps against pierce damage, not every attack made by a creature that sometimes uses pierce. A mixed attack or a separate fire attack still needs its own assessment. Likewise, the Mask’s poison resistance is not the same effect as a stronger poison-resistance mead.
Before entering an area with fire attacks, account for the weakness on every Root piece you retain. Fire-resistance preparation and changing the piece are loadout decisions to make before the fight. A higher displayed armor value alone does not describe these resistance interactions.
Use the complete set for an archery plan
All three Root pieces activate the +15 Bows set effect. Replacing one piece removes that set bonus while leaving the effects of the pieces still equipped. Check your active effects after any armor swap rather than assuming the bow bonus is permanent.
If your goal is safer ranged play, combine the set decision with an arrow supply, stamina food and room to draw the bow. The skill bonus does not prevent an enemy from reaching you while you are aiming. For an equipment upgrade, the separate Draugr Fang route explains the Guck and silver budget.
