Build planning in Wilds: match the decoration category, then check the slot level

A higher-level slot does not remove the weapon/armor decoration restriction. Match the decoration category first, then use a slot of equal or greater level. You can equip one talisman; forged talismans can be upgraded at the Smithy, while appraised talismans cannot.

The two checks every decoration must pass
- 1Does the weapon/armor category match?
- 2Is the slot level high enough?
- 3Does the resulting skill improve the intended build?
Do not start with the largest empty socket and assume it can accept anything. A decoration can fail the category check before its level is relevant. Once the category matches, a level 2 decoration can fit a level 2 or 3 slot, but not level 1.
| Illustrative decoration | Available slot | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon decoration, level 2 | Weapon slot, level 3 | Passes category and level checks. |
| Weapon decoration, level 2 | Armor slot, level 3 | The higher level does not solve the category mismatch. |
| Armor decoration, level 2 | Armor slot, level 1 | Correct category, insufficient slot level. |
| Armor decoration, level 1 | Armor slot, level 3 | Fits, but consider whether a smaller compatible slot could preserve the larger one. |
Plan the skill result before filling the holes
Write down the job of the build first. For the Charge Blade resource loop, that means deciding which attack route and state management you are supporting. A long list of skill names does not explain what the weapon is supposed to do.
Then identify the skill levels already supplied by equipment. The manual states that levels of the same equipment skill add together. Decorations can activate a skill or raise an existing level. Compare the final skill list rather than counting how many different pieces mention a desirable name.
Our planning recommendation is to record three things for each candidate change: the level you gain, what you remove to make room, and which part of the hunt should improve. A technically legal decoration is not automatically worth the slot if it supports a mechanic you do not use.
Use smaller compatible slots first when it preserves options
Consider a purely illustrative inventory containing a level 1 and a level 3 decoration, both from the same category, with one level 1 and one level 3 slot available. The level 3 decoration has only one fitting slot. Put it there, then use the level 1 slot for the smaller decoration.
If you place the level 1 decoration into the large slot first, it still fits legally—but the level 3 decoration cannot use the remaining small slot. You have not lost total socket count; you have lost a legal arrangement. Before replacing equipment, try rearranging the decorations.
This is a slot-allocation example, not a claim that a particular named jewel should appear in every Charge Blade set. Actual items can provide different skills and conditions, so inspect the specific decoration before applying the example.
Choose the correct talisman route
| Talisman type | How the manual distinguishes it | Build-planning consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Forged | Crafted and upgraded through Forge/Upgrade Talismans at the Smithy. | Check the actual next upgrade and its skill result before planning around it. |
| Appraised | Comes from quest-reward appraisal items; may have skills or decoration slots. | Evaluate what the item actually has. It cannot be upgraded through the Smithy. |
Only one talisman can be equipped. Do not combine the skills of two desirable candidates in a paper build as if both will be active together. Compare candidate A and candidate B as complete alternatives, including any slots that change the rest of your layout.
If a talisman is absent from the upgrade list, first check its type. An appraised item not having the forged-item upgrade route is not evidence that the Smithy is broken or that another upgrade material will unlock the option.
Armor swaps can change more than the visible defense number
Inspect ordinary equipment skills, Set Bonus Skills, Group Skills and total elemental resistances when changing a piece. The manual describes different activation conditions for the set and group systems; read the actual requirement on your equipment rather than assuming every set needs the same number of pieces.
Suppose a new piece gives a useful standalone skill but removes a piece that helped activate a bonus. Compare the entire result, not just the newly gained line. The same applies to a negative resistance on one piece: the total comes from the combined equipped armor values.
Appearance is separate from the functional build
Layered armor changes appearance without changing functionality. It cannot solve a missing skill or an incompatible decoration slot. Conversely, an effective mixed set does not need to retain its mixed appearance if you have suitable layered options.

The manual separately describes special Full Armor Sets whose pieces are handled together for certain operations. Do not confuse that equipment behavior with the general question of whether a mixed build meets a skill’s activation requirement.
Final check before spending materials
- Confirm the weapon route and target skills you are trying to support.
- Check actual equipment skills and the one selected talisman.
- Allocate decorations by category and slot level, reserving restricted large slots where useful.
- Inspect the resulting skill totals, bonus activations and elemental resistances.
- Compare the whole configuration with the old one before committing to a craft or upgrade.
