Why can enemies still cast spells during Crystal Maiden Frostbite?
On this page
Frostbite is a root, not a silence. It prevents movement and attacks, but you should not assume it disables every spell the target can cast.

If your kill attempt depends on an enemy being unable to press a defensive spell, identifying the control type matters more than seeing an ice animation. Frostbite solves a movement-and-attack problem; it is not interchangeable with every form of disable.
What to do, in order
- Identify what you need to stop: movement, attacks or a particular enemy spell.
- Use Frostbite to hold a target in place or stop its attacks. Do not describe the target as silenced to your teammate.
- Keep your follow-up ready. If the enemy has a relevant defensive spell, account for that spell instead of assuming the root removes the response.
- When the ice ends early, check dispels and active effects before concluding that the duration is wrong.
- Review the root’s level and duration when planning an ally’s follow-up; communicate the actual control window rather than a guessed stun duration.
Match the symptom to the cause
The enemy cast a defensive spell
A root is not a blanket prohibition on spell use. Whether a particular spell is restricted is a separate interaction.
I thought it was a stun
Valve’s note explicitly identifies Frostbite as a root. The inability to move does not make all disables equivalent.
The enemy stopped attacking but was not harmless
Preventing attacks still leaves other possible actions. Plan around what the ability blocks, rather than everything you wish it blocked.

Apply it to one concrete situation
You want your ally to hit a ground-targeted spell. Rooting the enemy can help keep its location predictable, but it does not prove the enemy cannot use a defensive ability. Tell your teammate “rooted” so the follow-up plan reflects the actual control.
Current base tooltip values
Values below are the unmodified fields in Valve’s dated English ability data. Slash-separated entries are listed level values, not a recommended skill build. Read the field label: damage, range, duration and percentages have different meanings. Upgrades and modifiers can change your client’s values.
| Tooltip field | Listed base value(s) |
|---|---|
| Mana cost | 125 / 135 / 145 / 155 |
| Cooldown (seconds) | 9 / 8 / 7 / 6 |
| DAMAGE PER SECOND | 100 |
| DURATION | 1.5 / 2 / 2.5 / 3 |
Limits that matter
This guide does not give an exhaustive list of abilities usable while rooted. It also does not generalise the non-ancient-creep damage multiplier to ancient creeps.

Does Frostbite stop normal attacks?
Yes. Its current description explicitly prevents movement and attacks.
Is every level the same duration?
No. The base duration is 1.5/2/2.5/3 seconds at levels 1–4. Use the level actually learned.
