Lich Frost Shield did not stop spell damage: what it actually reduces
On this page
Frost Shield reduces damage from attacks. It is not a general percentage reduction against every spell just because the shield has a magical appearance.

Choosing the right defensive target starts with the incoming damage source. A shield can be valuable against attacks while leaving a separate spell burst largely outside its main protective mechanic.
What to do, in order
- Identify whether the immediate threat is enemy attacks, spell damage or a mixture.
- Use Frost Shield where reducing attacks solves the current problem, rather than assuming its percentage applies to all incoming damage.
- Check the shield’s remaining duration while the enemy attacks. A cast that expired before the burst is not evidence about its active protection.
- Remember its nearby damage and slow are additional components, not proof that the protected unit is invulnerable.
- If defending a building, the official notes allow that target. Still account for duration and continuing enemy pressure.
Match the symptom to the cause
A spell burst still hurt the ally
The primary reduction is specified for attacks. Read the damage source rather than judging the effect from the blue shield animation.
The enemy was not slowed
The official notes exclude magic-immune enemies from the damage and slow. Do not assume all components apply to every target.
It worked briefly and then stopped
Base duration is 4/5/6/7 seconds by level. Recheck whether the shield was still active.

Apply it to one concrete situation
An ally is being hit by attacks while another enemy prepares a spell. Shielding can address the attack portion without being a complete answer to the incoming spell. Communicate that distinction so the ally does not mistake the cast for permission to remain in every source of damage.
Current base tooltip values
Values below are the unmodified fields in Valve’s dated English ability data. Slash-separated entries are listed level values, not a recommended skill build. Read the field label: damage, range, duration and percentages have different meanings. Upgrades and modifiers can change your client’s values.
| Tooltip field | Listed base value(s) |
|---|---|
| Mana cost | 100 / 110 / 120 / 130 |
| Cooldown (seconds) | 30 / 25 / 20 / 15 |
| DAMAGE REDUCTION | 45 / 50 / 55 / 60% |
| SLOW | 20 / 25 / 30 / 35% |
| SLOW DURATION | 0.5 |
| DAMAGE | 18 / 32 / 46 / 60 |
| BUFF DURATION | 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 |
Limits that matter
For unusual abilities that use attack mechanics, inspect the specific ability’s classification. This guide deliberately avoids an unsupported list that labels every spell animation as ordinary spell damage.
