Animals not breeding? Check the pair before expanding the habitat
On this page
Start with healthy, breeding-age adults, contraception switched off and the species’ mating season. Egg-laying pairs also need an accessible nest of the correct type. Welfare and research help breeding chances, but do not remove those prerequisites.

Check eligibility in this order
Select the intended parents individually. Two animals sharing a habitat is only the starting point: one may still be juvenile, past the species’ fertile age, or already occupied with offspring. Check the Zoopedia alongside their current status.

- Confirm adulthood and health. Check both animals, not just the one with the better genetic rating.
- Check contraception. A prevented animal will not become a parent because you add enrichment.
- Read the mating season. Waiting outside it is different from an unsuitable pair.
- Check existing offspring. Frontier describes mating for adults not already nurturing offspring.
- For egg layers, inspect nests. Filter the Habitat browser by species, choose its supported nest type and provide at least one accessible nest per pair.
Use Compare Mates before buying replacements
Open Info Panel → Genetics → Compare Mates. Compare the proposed pairing: two highly rated parents do not guarantee a stronger baby. Offspring inherit a mixture of genes, and results can be better or worse.
Use genealogy to avoid successive generations of close relatives. Repeated inbreeding can weaken fertility and immunity potential. Plan replacement breeders, but do not expect any unrelated pair to conceive immediately.

Improve the conditions that remain
Once the pair is eligible, address its weakest welfare requirements and consider fertility research. An attractive nest across an inaccessible route still fails the practical test: can the intended pair use the supported nesting site?
Try one planned pair first. Record the season and unmet needs, correct one issue, then observe. Adding competing partners makes it harder to know which change helped. Frontier also identifies distraction from other mating partners as a factor.

Shoals use a different population system
Good welfare supports growth and splitting for shoals and exhibit colonies, while contraception prevents new groups splitting off. Do not apply a lioness’s individual pregnancy cycle to a shoal of fish.
Success means observing reproductive progress appropriate to the animal type, not merely reaching a green welfare bar. If nothing changes, retain a save and record species, ages, season, contraception, nest access and research. For missing fertility unlocks, follow the research checks.
